IBB

Pardon my very cheesy Nigerian newspaper styled headline but I think it is quite appropriate in this case.

[For non Nigerians: Babangida is a past Nigerian military dictator who was responsible for many many bad bad things. while he was head of state. He wants to become president again.]

Like I said with my title, Babangida will be the Next Nigerian president unless you do something about it… BY VOTING FOR SOMEONE ELSE. Let us think logically for a moment,

  • IBB is is the only *credible politician that has declared his intention of being president, FACT!
  • IBB has a political structure on ground, FACT!
  • IBB has the money to execute this election, FACT!
  • IBB has every right to contest the election, FACT!

People are shouting they will NEVER vote for IBB, that’s cool, but who are you planning to vote for? Chris Okotie? Atiku? It is a real question you have to answer. not voting for Babangida means you should have someone to vote for who is it?

Becoming President is not beans or rather fish and chips (as a JD boy concerned). You have to work hard, do a lot of ground work and position for the long term. You have to be active as a leader and if you are in the opposition, the better your opportunity to shine. After the last election in 2007, I erroneously assumed people like Utomi were serious and would build upon the work they did then. but what did they do? I am not talking of  speaking on TV and giving interviews but real political ground work. Nothing I know of. 3 months before the 2001 election we will see every Okeke, Adebayo and Musa saying they are contesting, trying to form Obama. Rubbish!

I am sorry to break it to you, if there is no credible opposition in 2011, IBB will stroll into the Aso Rock while we Tweet and Blog our hearts away. As for me, I am not too bothered about who wins the forthcoming election as 99% of Nigerian politicians are shameless ‘ideologyless’ opportunists.  My main aim is to ensure that this next election is free and fair. As long as we the people have our votes counted, I am good.

*credible in this context means the person with a realistic possibility of winning the presidential election.

  1. I have and it make sense to me. It is easy to stay anonymous and attack me. My argument is straight forward, “You cannot stop IBB by not liking him. You have to do something like having an opposition who you will vote for in his place”. What is your argument? Why does it not make any sense?

If you are just here to troll without contributing, let me know.

  4. I think the alternative that you are proposing is not really an alternative at all. We all know that politics in Nigeria has nothing to do with votes and everything to do with power. IBB has enough power to win the election weather or not there is an opposition. Do you see my point?
You can say no to something without having an alternative

  7. I am sorry but I really don't understand.

“I think the alternative that you are proposing is not really an alternative at all.”

My asking people opposed to IBB to find a credible candidate who they can rally around is not an alternative? What then is?

” IBB has enough power to win the election weather or not there is an opposition.”

I disagree. There is a VERY high chance of him loosing if there is an opposition.

“You can say no to something without having an alternative”

Of course you can, but what will be the outcome?

  10. Haba… People why the beef now? The guy is making a valid point… No manner of “God forbid!” or “Lai Lai!” will stop IBB from strolling into Aso Rock nicely if noone does anything to ensure the contrary except wish it away… I see the point about rigging but COME ON. Do we really think IBB will single handedly rig the election for an entire country… I know Naija get as e be, but this isn't a Hollywood film where he can just swing into town and clear the entire government out all by himself… Na fish and chips? 😉

The point is that we need to DO something… If you can rally round a CREDIBLE candidate, do it… PLEEAAASE don't say Okotie if you really love God… If you can vote, then vote… Anything as long as we are not folding out arms saying “God forbid!”. Anything but that o…

  13. I have read your post and i have a few things to contribute.
1st i strongly believe u have given IBB way more power than he actually has ( Don't get me wrong, he is a very powerful man, so is Theo Danjuma and a few others ) IBB cannot just walk into power like that… certain people will not allow it. if he was so powerful it wouldn't take 17 years + to get back in power would it?
2ndly i strongly believe the man in question has no intentions of coming back, he is a strategist, and all this is part of the Big picture…the larger scheme of things… he is simply disrupting ( Or intending to ) the votes.
Nigeria has very credible people that can run the country, they are just not ready to die doing so. Nigeria is at that stage in her infant life where Gangsters and ruthless men are in power, as time goes, things will evolve. The very well educated kids of these evil men will take control ( This happens everywhere…America, UK..name it ) and things will change…we will then have a very close knit educated elite ruling over our dear nation, still evil, still stealing, but a bit more discrete and sophisticated.
What can be done abt the IBB affair? i think we should read between the lines…who is 'really' running for president? has he brought his head out yet? is IBB preparing the way for him? what is 'really' going on? that's the question we should be asking. once we've figured that out, we do what we do best ” siddon look ” 'cause the truth is…the people's voice WILL NEVER be heard, unless the people themselves are ready to die…are u ready to die? that's the question.

IBB has created a myth around him and we have to give him that. But it is no secret he has his quite a number of things under control. What is smart about him is he knows when to back pedal. You say people will not allow it, which people? We have people that play the role of perpetual opposition (Soyinka et al) but we are yet to get the opposition leaders. i.e those willing to oppose and then take the power. Mandela, Mugabe (even though i have reservation), The opposition politicians in the western world, etc.

  19. that's another problem, because Nigerian politicians know how to deal with such people – They make them stupidly rich. Soyinka can't talk too much, because he has unwittingly aided these men. Adams Oshumole has joined up with them. The only man that didn't fear them is dead now – RIP Gani.
The only way there can really be change in Nigeria is if the people have had enough…there has to be some sort of revolt. The people must stand up and fight…the only problem with that is there will be blood….and my friend no one wants to die.

  22. i am tired of all u people saying IBB is strategizing. strategizing for what? the only reason he backed down last time was because he saw umoru as his younger brother and didn't wantt o get into the messy power tussle. he is power hungry and he will sit down in aso rock as president if people don't do anything.

stop giving him more credit than he deserves. the guy just wants to be president. strategize, strategize. strategize my left nyash.

  25. I have nothing against IBB.He has every right to contest but my wish is that ” people's vote should count “.

  26. I have nothing against IBB.He has every right to contest but my wish is that ” people's vote should count “.

  27. Most Nigerians are opposed to IBB in principle but the lack of serious opposition as you have rightly said is likely to hand him the presidency on a platter not just for the reasons you have outlined but also because we are likely to get philosophical at the polling booths and say “…the devil you know is better than the angel you don't know.”

Any one who will be a credible opposition ( not one who's equally as bad and from the same generation creating a scenario of ' who's worse' in which case i won't bother to vote) must come out now and begin to “ginger” Nigerians.

Let's not forget that, as someone pointed out, political bigwigs don't go about rigging elections from booth to booth; Nigerians like you and I do it. therefore the issue of our National conscience must be addressed, Most people simply don't care who contests and who wins. Years of rigged elections has lead to apathy on the part of most while other's reason well if you can't beat them…join them! We need a candidate that will give the Nigerian hope for a change and inspire him to give a damn!
